Appledore and the area

Appledore is a great base for exploring North Devon's beautiful coastline, there is so much to see and do.

Appledore Quay is the heart of the village and the place where locals meet to chat and watch the world go by! Crabbing on the quay is lots of fun and Appledore holds the world championships every year, anyone can enter, just pick up a crabline from the local gift shops and find some bait (bacon works best) - kids will love it!

Appledore has several pubs with live music most nights of the week. Most of the pubs serve food and fresh fish is always on the specials board!  There are also teashops and independent restaurants in the village. We would be happy to provide you with details and all our cottages feature welcome packs with all the local pubs/restaurants phone number etc.

Appledore also has a Co-op shop on the quay that is open every day until 10pm and very handy for essentials and John's which has fantastic ingredients, fresh breads and delicious deli counter, perfect if you fancy something a bit special. For a bigger shop there is also Morrison's in Bideford, Asda in Bideford and Tesco in Barnstaple (they deliver too).

Our favourite place to visit nearby is Clovelly, this privately owned village is simply breathtaking and virtually unchanged for hundreds of years.  The village is free from cars and the path winds down the hill with its picture postcard cottages, tearooms and shops, ending in a pretty harbour at the bottom of the hill.

The walk down to the harbour and back is steep, so for those who find walking difficult you can take a ride both ways on the back of a landrover!

Great place to take a fishing trip, with many boats travelling out each day. There is a pebbly beach and pretty waterfall on the beach.

If surfing is your thing, you won't be disappointed! North Devon has some great beaches for surfing, kite surfing etc! Westward Ho! is the nearest surf beach, just 5 mins from Appledore.  But travel slightly further afield and you will find some awesome surfing at Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton Sands!

There is some fantastic golf courses in North Devon which golfers would enjoy and find a great challenge! Our favorites are Westward Ho! a famous links course with the usual touch of ponies and sheep roaming accross the course. Ilfracombe is great with stunning cliff top views out to see and very reasonably priced.  Of course there is the famous Saunton Sands Golf Club which everyone loves!
